Pickleball initially was played on four courts at East Lake Woodlands with expansion to 12 in recent years. Now, there is a new name and courts at the Ardea Country Club will soon be improved.

“The aesthetics are going to be a fantastic improvement,” said Alyson March, a member of the club who has played pickleball for three years.

That facility in Oldsmar recently had two teams in the fall league that includes teams at various levels throughout Tampa Bay. Aside from the courts at the former East Lake Woodlands facility, league games also have been played at such places as the McMullen Tennis Complex in Clearwater and the outdoor courts at Hillsborough Community College.

League play has resumed with the Oldsmar Oranges and newly formed Bandits based at the newly named Ardea location. Last season, the Oranges placed fourth among six teams in their division.

“We were real close to third,” said March, captain of the Oranges, who plays pickleball four times weekly.

Regardless of the outcomes of the matches, March noted that her teams are not unlike most that place a high value on the social aspects of the sport.

“The people are what makes it fun,” she said.
