When it comes to the thriving sport of pickleball, there have been plenty of startups of late. Count the Suncoast Pickleball Club among them.

So far, the preferred location for the company that formed last spring is the Sarah Vande Berg Tennis Center, which opened three years ago in Zephyrhills. To commemorate that

milestone on Oct. 21, management organized a memorable celebration that included a pickleball tournament run by the Suncoast Pickleball Club.

The Oktoberfest Invitational, which featured 120 players competing in eight divisions, marked the club’s third tourney at that location. It followed series in July and November with

another planned there on Dec. 15-17.

“We wanted to be able to host tournaments at a beautiful facility like that and bring people from all over,” said Armando Cajuso, who along with his wife Paula Rives and partner Ana

O’Donell run the club. “The facility itself has a European feeling and there’s food and drinks. People enjoy playing there.”

Suncoast Pickleball started out with four tourneys this year with plans to increase that number to 10 and add locations in 2024. O’Donell, who lives in Wesley Chapel, tipped off her partners about the tennis center.
