Featured Picklers: Melinda and Bryan Turner

Pickleball Smash After 5

Alex Wadsworth is a member of the Carrollwood Area Business Association who built a pickleball court on his property in Lutz. He recently combined sport and business.

Hence the CABA Pickleball Smash, which was played on March 20 as one of that organization’s After 5 networking events.

The inaugural tourney, one of more than a handful that Wadsworth has hosted since opening a court in his front yard in the spring of 2023, brought several players out to compete. It drew dozens of CABA members to watch, including some who played in it.

Wadsworth and partner Gary Ivanov, co-founders of Pickle Man, Inc., made it to the championship round. At that stage, they lost to Bryan and Melinda Turner.

“They are really good,” said Wadsworth, adding that Bryan Turner “just smashes it at me. It’s the CABA Pickleball Smash, though.”

Co-hosts for the inaugural tourney were the Turners, who are with Primerica; ADT Security’s Rob Cunningham, Quint Bodine with Heartland Payroll & HR; and Vicki Anderson of KDC Outfitters.

Wadsworth, who plans to do another CABA Pickleball Smash in the future, was encouraged at the number of people representing local businesses who turned out. As a result, he has begun accepting court sponsorships, which is different from previous tournament sponsors.

“It brought 60 businesses to my court,” Wadsworth said. “People put stickers around my court to promote their business.”
