Featured Picklers: Local tournament-playing pickleball players

No break for local picklers

Kathy McCausey and Brian Ridge (shown in dark blue at far right) plan to play as a mixed doubles team in the upcoming Bradenton Bash.

Just because the calendar turned does not mean there is a so-called offseason for Tampa Bay area pickleball players. January’s slate includes several tournaments with league play resuming after a short break.

Upcoming tourneys featuring plenty of local players are highlighted by the Bradenton Bash on Jan. 21; Frenchy’s Pickled Grouper Classic, Jan. 26-28 at Bardmoor Golf and Country Club in Seminole; and a Timber Pines series on Jan. 26 in Spring Hill.

Meanwhile, play in the U.S. Team Pickleball League, which crowned four champions in mid-December, resumes on Jan. 13. Plus, the Tampa Pickleball Crew is planning for a grand opening in late January at its new warehouse facility in Ybor City.

As for the recent league’s ending, Kathy McCausey, a partner with, lauded her team for its third-place finish in the 60-plus 4.0 division. Living the Dream improved as the season progressed, she noted.

McCausey and Brian Ridge plan to play mixed doubles together in the Bradenton Bash. They earned silver medals as partners in a Labor Day tourney at Weeki Wachee.

“He’s very skilled,” McCausey said. “He can be hard on himself but he’s very supportive.”

“I play constantly and I like playing with her,” Ridge said. “She’s got a good game.”
