Looking for a place to play in Hillsborough County?

Award winners display their trophies after a kids tournament at Alex Wadsworth’s home court.

In the third part of a three-part series on places to play pickleball throughout the Tampa Bay area, Hillsborough County is up after previous installments for Pasco and Pinellas.

In all, Hillsborough lists nearly 50 pickleball courts — and counting — marking a substantial increase from a combined nine courts at Julian B. Lane, Cuscaden and Madison parks in

2021. Among growth plans is a warehouse in Ybor City being converted into eight indoor courts with air conditioning.

The variable locations range from larger eight-court facilities to the smallest, the latter being one court built on the Lutz family property of Alex Wadsworth, who this year has hosted three tournaments. He had it built after being frustrated about overcrowded courts for himself and his friends near his home.

The Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation Department lists eight courts at each of three parks — Higginbotham, Balm and the Northlakes Sports Complex. Elsewhere, there are four courts at parks in Progress Village and Springhead, along with two at Westwood Lakes.

Additionally, other places to play include parks at Rowlett, Copeland, Williams, MacFarlane, Highland Pines, Al Barnes, Vila Brothers, Keystone and New Tampa; along with playgrounds at Foster and Skyview.

Indoor courts are at gymnasiums such as MLK, Forest Hills, Port Tampa, Loretta Ingraham and the Police Athletic League.
